Traditionally, the amount of time, effort, money, planning and coordination to achieve the “best selling author” badge has been impossible for most.
To start with, it required that you find a publisher who would print your book in the first place. An almost impossible task in and of itself.
However, in the early 2000’s the game changed when Jeff Bezos, the Founder of Amazon, launched Amazon Publishing. Bezos had a vision to help more people become authors. He thought that the publishing industry was antiquated, prehistoric and that there was a better way to do things.
He knew that there were a lot of people in the world who had enough experience for a book. Yet the traditional publishing industry was so entrenched in their ways they made it nearly impossible for anyone to share their voice.
As you can imagine, (or may remember) the response from the publishing industry was not a positive one. In effect, they said, “We’re gonna sue you. That’s not fair. You’re a book distributor; you can’t be a publisher too.”
Of course, this was total hypocrisy because most of the publishing companies were part of conglomerates that also owned distribution channels, bookstores, etc.
In any event, Bezos eventually backed down and canceled his plans for a publishing company.
The publishing industry declared it a huge victory and felt they had showed that upstart online book guy what was what.
Only three years later Jeff Bezos introduced a new gadget called the Kindle. He also announced “I’m gonna let anybody publish a book. Plus, they can publish it for free.”
The response from the book industry was less than enthusiastic, as can be imagined. Publishing experts proclaimed “What a joke. Electronic books will never go anywhere.”
Less than four years later and Borders went insolvent and shut down. Most other bookstores were severely struggling to stay afloat. 21
Jeff Bezos gutted the industry through innovation. He brought something new to the market that had been needed and wanted for a long time. A milestone was reached: now anyone can become an author.
This is good news for you. Amazon, with the Kindle and their CreateSpace arm, has made it possible for anyone to be able to share his or her voice.
And I am here to tell you that everyone has a book inside of them. Indeed, this has created a new breed of business people: the Authorpreneur. These are people who use books to grow their business, their brand and their income.
